CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas —
Subaru donated over $20,000 and supply kits for all 41 teachers at Gloria Hicks Elementary School as rising costs for school supplies and recent CCISD consolidations put added pressure on the campus.
The donation comes at a key time, as CCISD consolidations have put more teachers and students at the school.
"Of course with the additional students comes the additional supplies. So we're really happy to do this," Roger Reyna, General Manager at Hicks Family Subaru, said.
Along with supply kits, Subaru gave each teacher a $500 gift card for classroom teaching supplies.
The donation makes a significant difference for teachers like Emily Velasquez, who teaches early childhood special education.
"It's very expensive and now with the money we're getting for our classrooms to support our students I'm going to be buying sensory materials for my students with disabilities," Velasquez said.
Velasquez said the everyday supplies go a long way in her classroom.
"We use all of the supplies when it comes to markers, pencils we use those just to rotate them and write on the paper. It's very helpful because some of our kids are not always able to bring those supplies to school."
