GEORGE WEST, Texas — It was a day of remembrance in George West, as the community gathered to remember both prisoners of war and those who served our country and never made it home.
It was part of "National POW/MIA Recognition Day," which is celebrated annually across the United States.
The Live Oak County VFW Post 6119, county officials, along with members of the community, gathered outside the county courthouse Friday to pay their respects.
One veteran we spoke with said it's an important to recognize this day, as several families within the community have lost a loved one from war, or are still waiting for their loved one to return home.
"The youngsters and the teenagers today are not taught a lot of this, and we're working on keeping that awareness," said Michael Coquat with VFW Post 6119. "And we certainly appreciate the parents for passing that on to their children and the teachers and the law enforcement. It's something that's very important to us as Americans."
An exhibit called the "Missing Man Table" is also currently on display at the courthouse to explain the importance and history of the day.
