ALICE, Texas — Holiday socks are wanted in Alice for a sock drive hosted by the Miss Alice Texas Beauty Pageant.

These socks will be distributed to local nursing homes and adult day care facilities on Dec.16.

"It might just seem like a couple of little socks to some people, but to our girls being able to do this means so much more than that," said Jennifer Cardona-Norton, founder of the Miss Alice Texas Pageant.

While Christmas is usually a time to spend with loved ones, this year many families are being separated by COVID-19.

It’s especially hard for the elderly who are staying in nursing homes or senior centers because visits from family members are a huge risk. Those actions have inspired the young ladies of Miss Alice Texas Beauty Pageant to take action.

"During this pandemic, it just showed me that people are in need even worse this time of year," said Janessa Cardona, Junior Miss United World Miss Pre-teen Coastal Bend.

Jaquelyn Perez-Seanz. Miss Alice Texas 2020, says she's working to change the perception that her generation always is attached to their cell phones.

"You can be a part of your community," she said. "You don't just have to sit by and let others do the work."

Addison Garza, Junior Miss United World Coastal Bend, said she appreciates the chance to help her community through projects like the holiday sock drive.

"I love being out there and helping others," Garza said. "And that the best part of having the title is because you get more opportunities like this."

The service they are providing helps those who may need a reminder of the joys of Christmas this year.

"What were doing is trying to send a message that they are not forgotten, that they are cared for," said Cardona-Norton.

If you are interested in dropping off cheery socks for senior there are two drop-off locations for the program.

Socks can be left at Wedding Lace at 324 Main St. in Alice and Meridian Care, 219 N. King Street.
