CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — The Corpus Christi City Council voted to hire an engineering firm to consult and develop a design for the North Beach Canal project.
Council members approved a professional services agreement with Lockwood, Andrews, & Newman for phase I services. Those services will include the determination of a final project scope, and limits, whether the canal will function as a major drainage facility or not and be navigable. The project was approved for $508,988.
On December 17, 2019, the City Council passed an ordinance authorizing the design and construction of a navigable canal on North Beach. The North Beach area is prone to flooding when it rains.
Some of the tasks Lockwood, Andrews, & Newman must perform according to the contract are to create a concept of design, perform a drainage and traffic analysis, determine regulatory requirements, real estate availability, and providing a written report detailing the findings. The phase 1 work is expected to be completed by this December.
