CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — The hamburger is an American classic and has been around as long as people can remember.
Vick's has been a landmark in the Coastal Bend that has been firing up the griddle and satisfying hungry customers for 44 years. So it's a natural choice to visit on #TakeoutTuesday.
"My in-laws started it in 1976," said Lisa Pollakis, vice president of Vick's.
Today it is owned by husband and wife duo of Pollakis and her husband, George, who took it over in 1996. Since then it has become a true family business.
"Our children are working here too," she said. "We are a third-generation family business in the Coastal Bend."
From after football games at Buc Stadium to a normal Tuesday lunch rush, Vick's drive-thru remains busy with loyal customers.
"The food service has been excellent," customer Ruben Pena said. "Very very good for the last 40 years."
The stay-at-home orders and the closing of dining rooms across the state have changed their operation, but they are still managing to get by strong during an uncertain time.
"We have shifted to primarily drive-thru with some takeout," she said.
Pollakis is excited to reopen the dining room after Governor Gregg Abbott's announcement yesterday.
The community has always supported the establishment located on Port right near the intersection at Leopard Street. During this time, the restaurant has given back to those working on the front lines.
"We have always given a 20% discount to first responders," Pollakis said. "We have extended that to health care workers as well."
Vick's might be known for their burgers, but it is not the only tasty item on the menu.
"We have hand-breaded chicken, fish, shrimp and plenty of Tex-Mex options," she said.
The original restaurant is located at 626 N. Port. They opened a second location that is located at 4989 Ayers.
