CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — North Beach received a substantial hit when Hanna stormed through our area.
Business and homeowners there spent Sunday cleaning up the damage left behind by the hurricane.
It's an area that's familiar with major flooding, especially when a big storm comes through.
A day after Hanna slammed into South Texas, some roads on north beach are still flooded.
And whether it was the first hurricane they’ve endured.
“To be honest, it's my first hurricane that I've been through and it's kind of devastating,” Corpus Christi resident Rebecca Eye said. “Cause I honestly didn't think it would be like this."
Or their second, many people on Sunday flocked to North Beach to see what was left behind.
"We had to park all the way on the other side and walk over here,”Corpus Christi visitor Rhonda Najera said. “It's really flooded, real bad."
Homeowners and business owners, however, know all too well the area floods after a big storm.
"It was one ocean,” said One Stop Shopping Center owner Clemente Runnels. “There was no street or nothing. It was just like from the ocean and the waves were pretty high. It was like ocean on land."
Runnels stayed at his store on Saturday until the weather got too bad.
And when he returned on Sunday morning, he learned of the devastation.
“A lot of things were destroyed,” Runnels said. “The bottom level of my clothing rack was destroyed, the TV that was right here."
Runnels says the damages from Hurricane Hanna will cost him at least $5,000.
And he says unfortunately the future of his business is uncertain after going through two very different storms this year.
"Ain't no telling with COVID going on, I'm not really too optimistic,” Runnels said. “Like I'm up in the air if it's going to be able to reopen."
But like all Coastal Bend residents know after Hurricane Harvey nearly three years ago, the comeback is always greater than the setback.
The cleanup still is underway along North Beach.
And we’ve also learned that the Texas State Aquarium thankfully didn't suffer any significant damage.
But it will be closed until further notice.
