Hot Labor Day with isolated showers; tropical update

Though it hasn’t rained everywhere over the Labor Day holiday weekend, there were a few thundershowers in the vicinity throughout Saturday and today.  This was especially true out over in Hebbronville where some heavy downpours occurred earlier this afternoon.

Tonight will be warm and muggy with lows in the mid to upper 70s.

Labor Day will feature hot temperatures and a few isolated thundershowers roaming the area courtesy of tropical moisture that remains plentiful.  At any point, these tropical showers could drop some significant amounts of rain in a very short time.  Expect these showers to stay in the forecast for much of the week along with near-seasonal highs in the afternoon; dependent on the tropics.

The National Hurricane Center has issued statements on Potential Tropical Cyclone #7 over in the northern Caribbean near the Bahamas.  They now have it with a high chance of tropical development in the next 48-hours as it pushes towards the Gulf of Mexico.

The system could quickly become a tropical depression later this evening and “Gordon” by tomorrow afternoon.  It is forecast to ride around a ridge of high pressure in the eastern United States and eventually could make landfall somewhere around Louisiana and Mississippi by the middle of next week.

Here in the Coastal Bend, this track is far removed from us and would lead to an increased rip current risk and increased swells with little to no rainfall if it forms into a closed circulation, which would rob South Texas of moisture.  Of course, this is highly dependent on what the system does in the coming days and we’ll update the forecast as necessary moving forward.
