Onshore flow will increase tonight into Tuesday as an area of
low pressure over the southwest Gulf of Mexico approaches deep
south Texas. The moderate southeast winds will lead to increasing
swells that will impact the beaches of the Middle Texas coast.
With elevated astronomical tides combined with the moderate
onshore flow and building swells, minor tidal overflow is expected
for the beaches from Port Aransas south to Baffin Bay around the
time of high tide Tuesday morning. Swells with long periods will
also increase the risk for rip currents to high on Tuesday and
should linger into Wednesday.
The National Weather Service in Corpus Christi has issued a
Coastal Flood Advisory, which is in effect from 4 AM to 10 AM CDT
Tuesday. A High Rip Current Risk has also been issued. This High
Rip Current Risk is in effect from Tuesday morning through
Wednesday evening.
* COASTAL FLOODING…Water levels at the time of high tide will be
near 1.0 foot of inundation (2 feet above mean sea level) for
Gulf-facing beaches.
* TIMING…Coastal Flood conditions early to mid Tuesday morning,
rip current conditions Tuesday morning through Wednesday evening.
* IMPACTS…Strong rip currents are expected along gulf-facing
beaches, especially near piers and jetties. These rip currents
can become life-threatening to anyone entering the surf. Poor
driving conditions are expected as water reaches the dunes,
mainly during high tide cycle. Some beach access roads will be
impassible.
A Coastal Flood Advisory indicates that onshore winds and tides
will combine to generate flooding of low areas along the shore.
Swim near a lifeguard. If caught in a rip current, relax and
float. Don’t swim against the current. If able, swim in a
direction following the shoreline. If unable to escape, face the
shore and call or wave for help.
