CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — The Coastal Bend’s veterans will soon have a new place to go for VA health care, as officials broke ground on a new, expanded outpatient facility Wednesday.

Plans call for the clinic to be roughly 69,000 sq. ft. and will be available for primary care and geriatric services to thousands of local veterans.

“Our Corpus Christi veterans are really the gems of South Texas and it is our honor to be able to give back to them and they deserve nothing less than our very best,” said Dr. Jennifer Wood, Deputy Chief of Staff for the VA Texas Valley Coastal Bend Health Care System.

When finished, the new clinic being built at South Padre Island Dr. and West Point Rd. will replace the current outpatient facility on Old Brownsville Rd. and will offer veterans the latest in services.

“It is going to be state of the art, it’s really going to be a very modern, holistic facility designed with a patient-centered eye,” said Wood.

Wood says the new clinic allows the current facility’s staff to also expand, which means more care for more veterans.

“It’s giving us the space that we need to grow our teams and continue to grow our services,” said Wood. “We’ve simply outgrown the current clinic.”

Officials expect construction to take a little more than a year, with the brand-new clinic expected to open in December 2022. Once the new clinic opens, the old outpatient facility will be re-purposed, allowing the VA to offer more care options locally.
