Police believe they have identified the boater who hit and killed a kayaker in Aransas Pass on Monday.

According to the Aransas Pass Police Department, officers have located the boat and its operator, and now feel it was a tragic accident that led to the death of 31-year-old Trace Richardson of Portland.

Police say that, based on recovered evidence, the collision between the boat and Richardson’s kayak occurred around 5:42 a.m. May 27, more than 45 minutes before that day’s sunrise.

Richardson was not wearing a life jacket and did not have lights on his person or his kayak at the time of the accident, police said.

APPD says it will continue to work with the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department in this ongoing investigation.
