CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Restrictions were lifted between mile marker 510 and 512 of the Gulf Instracoastal Waterway after a sunken sand barge was removed from the area.

On Dec. 6, Sector/Air Station Corpus Christi watchstanders responded to reports that a barge being towed by a tug boat was taking on water.

After removing the sunken sand barge and making sure the waters were safe, the Coast Guard lifted safety restrictions for the area.

"The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers survey data shows that sand from that barge did enter the waterway, however the sand is located on the slope of the channel or in depths greater than 12 feet, and currently does not pose a risk to safe navigation," Coast Guard officials said.
