Tight bonds will serve George West well against Refugio

Heading into the second week of the high school football season, it appears George West will be a strong contender to make a deep run in the Class 3A playoffs.

George West has a winning tradition: Forty-six wins over the last four years says a lot, and there appears to be no slippage this year.

The Longhorns defeated West Oso, 38-3, in Friday’s season opener, churning out almost 400 yards on the ground.

The team expects nothing less than success from this season.

"Well, our expectations are always high, and I always tell them that's the only way it's going to be here at George West,” said George West Head Football Coach Brent Kornegay. “Our kids know that, and they expect to win.”

Kornegay said the team’s success is twofold, beginning with its student athletes.

“Fortunately, we have been blessed to have great kids,” he said.

The other factor is a solid coaching staff.

“(They’ve) led our kids in the right direction, and be successful, so we are really proud of that," Kornegay said.

"Every year, there is a tight bond between all of us,” said quarterback Devon Jackson. “And it's about brotherhood, and coach Kornegay preaches you give your all, all four quarters."

The Longhorns’ defense also again appears to be one of the best in South Texas, keeping West Oso out of the end zone, while allowing just three points.

"I think what holds our defense together is that brotherhood mentality that, we are going to hit someone hard in the mouth,” said linebacker Ryan Thomisee. “And if you got my back, I got your back, and we are going to swarm to the ball every single play."

That mentality will be useful this Friday night as George West hosts the defending Class 2A Division I state-champion Refugio Bobcats in what could be an instant classic.
