CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — We also want to congratulate Calallen head football coach Phil Danaher, who made history Friday night by becoming the first Texas high school football coach to notch 400 victories at one school.
Danaher and the Wildcats set the record with a 35-0 triumph over Edcouch-Elsa in the opening round of the playoffs.
He now has 468 career wins, which is the most in Texas high school football history.
We caught up with the legendary Danaher today, who said the record isn’t just about him.
“The thing that gets me, it really goes to a lot of people,” Danaher said. “Coach Steve Campbell has been with me 35 years and he has been here for all 400. Then you have (Calallen line coach Cliff) Fowler who played here and has now coached here for several years.
“And then of course all the players who played here, so it's a team effort from all of us. It was good to do it, be the first coaching staff to win 400 games at one school. I didn't even realize that was a possibility because I thought someone had already done that.”
Danaher will go for win number 469 this Friday when his Cats travel to Floresville to meet Kerrville Tivy in the area round of the playoffs.
