ARANSAS PASS, Texas — These are exciting times for Aransas Pass basketball as both the boys and girls teams are still in the playoffs.

In fact, the girls have qualified for the Class 3A Region IV tournament which starts tomorrow in Seguin.

But first, we want you see their brand-new basketball gym at Aransas Pass High School. It is absolutely gorgeous and opened up just in time for the basketball season.

The Lady Panthers are 24-9.

They are just wins away from making it to state. And their road to San Antonio starts tomorrow when they play Schulenburg at 6 p.m.

“We have been really successful over the years but we didn't make it as far as last year, so it's good to be going back to regionals again,” Aransas Pass post Kimberly Castillo said. “We have played really good defense this year.”

The Lady Panthers’ strong finish has pumped them full of confidence.

“We have been putting in a lot of work focusing in on our strengths and trying to solidify those and work on the little things,” guard Makhileigh Brown said. “I think our strengths are pretty much everything, we just want to be the best we can be.”

Aransas Pass coach Garry Smith said his team’s opportunistic defensive nature has been critical this season.

“The things I really tried to focus on with them is taking care of the ball number one,” Smith said. “But we still want to be aggressive with the basketball and I think that has really helped us. It's kind of transferred over onto the defensive side. It's one of the things that's helped us cash in on opportunities.”
