On Feb 8, 2011 the Port Aransas High School boys basketball team lost to Pettus High School. Now losses in basketball are common especially in district play when teams play each other twice.

But this loss for the Marlins was notable. Why? It was the last district loss for the Marlins to date. That’s right, the Marlins have won 86 straight district games since that loss eight years ago. Head Coach Kris Jones was an assistant when the streak was started.

“To not lose a district game since 2011 is pretty cool,” Jones said.

Pretty cool is an understatement. A streak of this length is unheard of in sports and to put it in perspective the last time the Marlins lost a district game, some of their players were just eight or nine years old. For these players, winning district games is all they know.

“I don’t remember ever coming to a game and see us lose a district game,” senior Ryan Brown said.

Both the players and coaches acknowledged that the streak is great, but they all have something much larger on their mind.

“We’re proud of this but we are looking forward to making a good playoff run,” Jones said.

The Marlins will try to push that streak to 87 when they play Refugio next.
