CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — We have 23 Coastal Bend teams that have qualified for the playoffs. Among those, the Flour Bluff Hornets finished tied with Victoria West for second place in District 15-5A Division II with a 6-2 record.

It’s been a roller-coaster season, but it appears everything is coming together for them at just the right time.

They are finally getting healthy and they certainly have the talent to make a deep run in the playoffs.

The Hornets travel to Rio Grande City Friday night to play a Rattlers team that is a co-district champion.

RGC has won six in a row and finished the regular season at 9-1.

They will be a tough challenge, but expect the Hornets will be well-prepared.

“I feel like we are playing really good right now,” Flour Bluff coach Chris Steinbruck said. “Coming off two big district wins and we are going into bi-district relatively healthy and in every phase I feel like we have played very well.

“The kids are excited about putting another gold football in the trophy case for their school and we get that opportunity and we are excited about it.”

Flour Bluff quarterback Drew Schmidt said his team’s early struggles has prepared it for anything it will face in the playoffs.

“I think we are in a good place right now,” Schmidt said. “We have gone through a lot of adversity this season and I think it has made us a lot better as a team.

“Our attitude is the sky is the sky is the limit. We can go as far as we can and take every game at a time and beat whoever is in front of us.”

The Hornets’ practice this week has steeled them for a challenge Friday against the Rattlers, running back/linebacker Bryce Hall said.

“We are all going into this expecting strong competition and we have to play our hardest,” Hall said. “We are prepared.”

It should be a great game. KRIS reporter Roland Rodriguez will be reporting live from this game at 6 p.m. and 10 p.m. on Friday, so keep it tuned right here for complete game coverage.

The Flour Bluff-Rio Grande City game is only one of a number of intriguing games across the Coastal Bend.
