When you think of Robstown sports you automatically think of baseball, and for good reason. They have won for many, many years.
But in football, meanwhile, the Cottonpickers are determined to get back on the winning track this year.
They have not been to the playoffs since 2010, and have not won a district game since 2013.
"Well, you know we talk about it,” said head football coach Arturo Garcia. “The kids know what is ahead of them. We are trying to win that first district ballgame and hopefully get some momentum and go from there."
And Garcia said it hasn't been from lack of effort: instead, he said the players need confidence, and the wins will come."
A lot of it is between the ears and getting the mind right,” he said. “Recent history sometimes doesn't favor you and you have to fight through that and just get better daily and learn how to win and be all in. Do the little things that add up."
The Cottonpickers will play in the newly formed District 16-4A Division II.
It will be very different this year because the district is broken up into two zones, and Robstown will battle Sinton, Rockport-Fulton, Ingleside and West Oso for three playoff spots.
"I think we will be in the mix because we are working hard this year,” said linebacker and offensive lineman Isaac Lemus. “I have seen a lot of improvement from a lot of people and I have seen more like, want, from people who are stepping up, and I think we have a decent team to do something."
The Cottonpickers open their season Aug. 28 at home against London.
"I think we have a good team coming together this year and we have a lot of the tools to hopefully make a playoff run," said tight end John Vallejo.
