CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Brad Smithey has been hired as the new football coach at West Oso High School.

Smithey's experience includes serving as offensive coordinator and head powerlifting coach at Victoria West High School. He also served as coaching intern/assistant wide receivers coach with the Green Bay Packers in the NFL and offensive coordinator/recruiting/strength coordinator at Brazosports High School in Freeport.

He received a master's of science in Sports Studies and Athletic Administration from Southeastern Oklahoma State University in Durant, Oklahoma.

“Our goal at West Oso High School is to build strong teams by teaching our athletes how to work together, to effectively communicate, be prideful, and most importantly, be known for outstanding sportsmanship," West Oso Superintendent Conrado Garcia said. "Coach Smithey will add to our legacy of holding ourselves to high standards and communicating shared expectations to our athletes, parents, and spectators as we promote a winning football season. I believe he will collaborate with the coaching staff to accomplish this by working together with our athletes for a common purpose on the field and in the classroom.”

Smithey's previous coaching resume helped sell him to school administrators, according to West Oso athletic director Cheryl Fillmore.

“We look forward to the experience Coach Smithey will bring to our football program," Fillmore said. "He understands that we will keep our eye on the goal of educating and making positive, life-long memorable experiences for student athletes.”

He will begin his job later in the summer as he directs the Bears for the start of the 2020 football season.
