West Oso continues its magical ride this week by advancing another round in the playoffs.

The Bears are making their deepest run in 15 seasons, helping earn them our Nissan Dealers Friday Night Fever Team of the Week.

They advanced into Friday’s game against Llano at Alamo Stadium in San Antonio after a wild 57-56 triumph over Port Isabel last week. That triumph pushed them to 7-4 for the season.

“It’s a great thing to do because Oso is known for being a basketball school,” quarterback Malachi Flores said. “Around this time to be able to still play this sport, it’s a great thing. The coaches came an instilled a new program and gave us this mindset that whatever you do, put your mind to it. And that’s what we stuck to.”

Defensive back Craig Clemons said the Bears’ determination has been forged throughout the season after getting its spark more than a year ago.

“Hard work, dedication, coming up early,” Clemons said. “It started last November, we were out here putting in the work and staying together as a team.

“Brotherhood, that’s why we are here today. I don’t think we are playing at our best level, but w are still playing in the second round, doing the best we can and it’s only going to get better.”

West Oso coach Pete Guardo said his team’s attitude has been transformed this season.

“We wanted them to get rid of that loser’s mentality and believing,” Guardo said. “Listen, we have a good core of kids here that can do some things and it’s not going to come easy on just athletic ability. We have to put in some work and the kids bought into that since August.

“Even when it was hot out here, they put in the work. We have everybody at practice, they listen, a bunch of great kids. They say ‘yes sir’, ‘no sir.’ We have not had any issues with that.”

Congratulations to the West Oso Bears, our local Nissan Dealers Friday Night Team of the Week.
