CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — The Coastal Bend has long been known for producing lots of young tennis stars.
And it appears another one is on his way to producing big results.
Thanks to young men like 12-year-old Kameron Fernandez, who is one of the top players in the state.
Fernandez may not be very big but he delivers a big game. He is the area's number one player in his age division and ranked in the top 15 in the state.
"I like the game so much because it's a sport you can play forever and it gives you good life lessons to work hard and try to get better at what you're doing,” Fernandez said.
Legendary coach Ken De Konig has been working with Kameron since he was 7.
And he sees something very special in his young phenom.
"For his age, his backhand slice is phenomenal,” De Konig said. “So we are working on all this. So, by the time he is 14, 16 it's all cooking for him.”
His coach’s teaching style is inspiring Fernandez.
“I like working with him because he teaches me all my shots and teaches me tactically,” Fernandez said. “I just really like him."
His coach says Fernandez’s tennis instincts are advanced for his age.
“He is very coachable because he is smart, intelligent, he understands what i am asking from him and a good student and applies it instantly."
Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the United States Tennis Association shut down in March.
During that time, Fernandez got in plenty of practice. since the USTA reopened on Monday.
The young phenom is more than prepared for competition.
