CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — School is back in session in the Coastal Bend, meaning parents will have to juggle work, and making sure their children -- many of whom will be starting classes virtually -- are getting the proper education they need.
It is going to be a stressful start to the school year. Between COVID-19 health concerns and the idea of virtual classes on all levels, it will be a tougher start to the academic calendar than usual.
For those looking to homeschool their kids, but want their student to get more specialized teaching, places such as the The Home School Academy can help.
"Each student is self-paced so they work by themselves," said Home School Academy director Jeremy Reyes. "They have the added benefit of having a teacher on site."
The Home School Academy is the combination of a regular school setting and homeschooling.
Students are in classrooms, spread out, with about three to four students to a class. But as Reyes mentioned, the students work at their own pace, similarly to a homeschool-style of teaching.
For some students, the self-paced classes with a teacher is huge for their academic development.
"You get to take your time and it is not all rushed," said student Sarah Monroe.
Monroe is getting the education she needs in the style that she wants, but her mother Stephanie Cain said it gives her peace of mind.
"The security of knowing that Miss Reyes was there, as well as Jeremy, was comforting," Cain said. "They could continue their schooling."
When the novel coronavirus pandemic really hit Corpus Christi, the academy shut its doors and had students continue their classes with the teachers from home. Those teachers, even on weekends, were just a call away.
"It was very comforting, being able to log in at any time if Sarah had any questions," Cain said.
Even if the classrooms are full, students are able to take classes via a virtual platform such as Zoom. This allows the academy to host more students.
Monroe will be a junior this year at the academy, and Cain is overcome with emotion with the decision she made for her daughter's education.
"It's just a really good thing," Cain said, after taking a pause. "I am so glad that we found the Home School Academy."
Classes already are in session, but parents can still sign their children up for classes.
