Residents who receive SNAP benefits can use their card to pay for online grocery orders starting next month.

Walmart and Amazon are the first retailers to join the program in the Lone Star State, and as Gov. Greg Abbott told KRIS 6 News in an interview, you can also use the card in other ways, such as at restaurants.

"You're exactly right; you're spot on,” he said. “So it provides these new strategies and different ways that families can go about using their SNAP benefits that, whatever may be open and available to them, they can access in this situation that we are working through, which is the coronavirus.”

Abbott requested federal approval for the additions included in this pilot program, which removes barriers to access food.
"That game plan is in place right now to more easily access their SNAP benefits,” he said. “We want to make sure that everybody who needs access to SNAP benefits will receive them."

The program is expected to be in place by May 18 statewide.
