CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Catholic Charities of Corpus Christi created the ‘Suit Up!’ program about a year and a half ago. The program provides career assistance to those who need it, including new and gently used men’s clothing for interviews and the job search.
“I think it’s very important for our community because many people are without jobs right now, and it’s nice when you have a nice shirt, a nice tie, maybe some nice slacks to go out and look for work,” said Elma Ortiz, the Department Director of the Emergency Aid Department with the Catholic Charities.
The program was shut down due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but was started back up this week. It is currently only available through appointment only.
Irma Martinez, who works with the Family Self-Sufficient Program, primarily assists people in their search for clothing.
“I will get a little bit of background of what kind of job they’re looking for, or if they’re going to have an interview, what kind of an interview is it? Do they need just casual, but nice, attire to use? Or, is it a suit and tie? We furnish all that here as well,” Martinez said.
All the clothing is available thanks to donations from people in the area. In addition to professional and business casual attire, Catholic Charities is also looking for fire resistant clothing used in the oil and gas industry. To make a donation, stop by the Catholic Charities at 615 Oliver Ct. in Corpus Christi.
On top of outfits, the ‘Suit Up!’ program also provides career resources and resume building assistance.
“To make sure that we’re getting you in the right direction, making sure you have the right resources to where we can guide them to where they might be hiring right now,” Ortiz said.
