It’s Week 6 of high school football action and district action for our Class 5A schools will begin.
This week’s marquee match-up will feature Moody and Gregory-Portland.
Despite playing just one non-district game, Moody and Gregory-Portland jump into district play Friday night.
It’s important for both teams to get off to a good start because the new look Class 15-5A Division 1 is made up of nine teams.
And with only four teams able to qualify for the postseason, it’s going to be a mad scramble.
"I don't think you can have any more than three losses to get into the playoffs,” Gregory-Portland coach Rick Rhoads said. “Obviously, that's what we want because we haven't been there in a few years and that's our goal. I think that third loss might put you out.”
Despite their 35-7 loss to Calallen last week, the Wildcats believe they have made great strides in preparing for Moody.
"We felt Calallen was a really good and tough opponent and they came out of the gate really strong,” Gregory-Portland wide receiver Conner Durrill said. “We think we didn't respond as well as we thought we would. We hope to change that this week and finally get on top and change what has been happening.”
Moody hung 46 points on Beeville to win its season opener. It’s a team that can score produce a lot of offense.
"We have three quality running backs and a really experienced QB, but we are rebuilding our offensive line,” Moody coach Mike Cantu said. “So there’s time you will see us in the slot set or the spread, so we try to be multiple but we try to adapt to what we have.”
It should be a really good matchup. You can watch all of the action on our sister station KDF with all of the action beginning at 7:30 p.m. Friday.
We hope you’ll watch.
