CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Area businesses are pulling out all the stops for a Millennial High Holiday.
Though Harry James Potter was born July 31, 1980, which -- for most -- would put him on the Gen X/Millennial divide at age 39, the world didn't become aware of The Boy Who Lived until British author J.K. Rowling released what is known in the United States as "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone," in 2001.
Businesses such as Greenlight Coffee and The Coffee Muggle are celebrating the fictional landmark with special menus and events for the day.
Greenlight Coffee's macarons, provided by Moonlight Macarons, were selling fast Wednesday morning.
"When I got here (at 10:30 A.M.), there were only three left," said barista Alysen Lathrop, who works at the Southside location.
But because of the power outage affecting the Southside on Wednesday, the special menu also will carry over to Thursday while supplies last.
It includes macarons in the shapes of golden snitches; Pusheen the cat wearing a Gryffindor scarf and "Harry Potter" glasses; and round macarons decorated with 9 3/4, the Kings Cross train platform in London that gives Hogwarts students access to the school; and the scar left by Potter's nemesis, Voldemort. They can be paired with Butterbeer, a favorite drink of the wizarding crowd the shop makes in an adult version, which includes vodka and butterscotch Schnapps, and children's versions, which are non-alcoholic. Patrons eating at the shop can enjoy their treats to the sounds of the "Harry Potter" movie soundtracks.
Addie Altemose and her mother specifically chose today for their first visit to The Coffee Mugg(le) on Morgan Avenue. After finding out the "Harry Potter"-themed local coffee shop is throwing its second annual birthday party in the wizard's honor tonight from 7-9 p.m. at the shop, her mom, Amber James, said 12-year-old Addie is "begging to come back in her robes."
The fete at The Coffee Mugg(le) will feature exclusive treats from Hamlin Pharmacy, a costume contest and drinks exclusive to tonight's event.
One would think choosing a wand for the occasion would be difficult, as Addie has two: a version of Potter's good friend Luna Lovegood's, and a version belonging to Potter's godfather Sirius Black. But when asked which she'd take to the party, Addie didn't miss a beat.
"Luna Lovegood," she said decisively.
The pair sat at a table by the window playing "Harry Potter" Uno, chosen from the shop's bookshelves full of on-theme books and games.
"We're making up the rules as we go," James said, smiling.
Addie opted for the "Basic Witch," which she explains is Coffee Mugg(le)'s version of non-alcoholic "Butterbeer," and James opted for the "Salty Snitch" latte.
While Addie has "watched the movies and read every book, multiple times," according to James, mom is just now getting around to reading the books. But they both made a pilgrimage to Universal Studios' The Wizarding World of Harry Potter in Los Angeles over the Christmas break. They hope to visit its Orlando counterpart in October.
The Coffee Mugg(le) closes at 6 p.m., but will reopen tonight for the party.
