ROCKPORT, Texas — Some major financial aid is heading to parts of the Coastal Bend that were hardest hit by Hurricane Harvey.

During the recent Texas Legislative session, lawmakers passed a $2 billion worth of funding for Harvey recovery around the state.

Today, Speaker of the House Dennis Bonnen was in Rockport promoting some of the help the city and surrounding areas will receive, including a disaster recovery loan program for communities that suffered significant infrastructure damage.

"We're never ready for a hurricane to strike. Tell them to go away, we don't want them here,” Bonnen said. “But we are in a better prepared position then we have in the past.

“We're never going to be perfect. But we are in a better place because of the great work of legislators."

For the first time in Texas history, lawmakers agreed through FEMA to match funds spent by smaller communities for rebuilding.

It was a big win for South Texas coastal communities.
