Gov. Abbott announces statewide COVID-19 rent and utility assistance

Texans struggling to make ends meet due to the COVID-19 pandemic will now have the opportunity to receive rent and utility assistance thanks to the Texas Rent Relief Program.

Governor Greg Abbott announced the program, funded by the latest federal COVID-19 stimulus bill, would administer one billion dollars to qualifying households.

"The COVID-19 pandemic has placed a significant financial strain on many Texans, and the Texas Rent Relief Program will provide an incredible lifeline to households in need of assistance on their rent and utility payments," said Gov. Abbott in a release.

The application to apply for rent and utility assistance opens Feb. 15. Qualifying applicants must be at or below 80 percent of the median income in the area they reside. Applicants at or below 50 percent of the area median income, and households where one or more members have been unemployed for at least 90 days will be prioritized.
