A car that was accidentally put into reverse ran over and killed a child in a neighborhood in Sugar Land, Texas.
The incident was reported around 10:20 a.m. Tuesday.
The Fort Bend County Sheriff’s Office said 3-year-old Dia Nebhnani’s father started the car to cool off the interior when the car got put into reverse.
He said the open driver’s door knocked the child to the ground and the car’s front wheel rolled over her.
Investigators said people at the scene performed CPR on the girl, but she did not survive.
Investigators are reviewing security video from the home to piece together how the accident happened.
Maj. Chad Norvell, with the Fort Bend County Sheriff’s Office, says, “We do believe now the dad started the car, reached in with one foot, put his foot on the break, reached inside to start the car and the kids were still outside the car, they were not inside the vehicle. Somehow by doing that, he did — the car did get put into reverse.”
The father then tried to jump in the car and start the vehicle, but it still ran over the child.
Investigators said they still believe it’s a horrible incident.
“We’re still not seeking to pursue charges, we have no evidence of that and we are seeking to get video from his house. He had a camera right over his driveway and he has given us consent to provide it to us and he is being very cooperative and we’re continuing to investigate at this time,” Maj. Norvell said.
