A suspected thief was killed during a violent confrontation with a homeowner in the Southside of San Antonio.

According to San Antonio Police Chief William McManus, the homeowner found a man trying to steal a jack from under his car parked outside his home on Jennings Avenue around 6:30 a.m Tuesday morning.

McManus says the suspect got the jack into his car and tried to drive away, but the homeowner grabbed onto the car and fired a couple shots from his own gun, possibly striking the suspect.

The suspect’s car crashed into the front yard of a home one block over, where he died. The chief said the medical examiner would have to determine whether the suspect died as a result of the shooting or the crash.

Chief McManus said, “This case is about a homeowner protecting his property the man makes a living as a mechanic and the deceased was stealing his car jack he tried to stop him, shots were fired, and he wound up dead in his car down the road.”

McManus said it’s likely the homeowner, described as a man in his 40s, would not face charges.

He added that the homeowner works as a mechanic and he uses his tools as a way to make a living. The suspect who died has not been identified. He was described as a man in his 20’s.
