PORT ARANSAS, Texas — Today was the first day of classes for students in the Port Aransas ISD, and for the first time ever, they have a police officer dedicated to patroling the district.

Officer Brett Boyer has been part of the Port Aransas Police Department for the past eight years, but now he'll serve as the school’s resource officer.

He will patrol the district's elementary, middle and high schools, which are all within a block radius. His duties will include much more than just being a security guard.

“I'm also the unofficial counselor, nurse, inspiration, however you want to put it,” he said of his new role. “I'm here for everything.”

Boyer said students are already making him feel welcome. He told us he got a few fist bumps from students today.
