PETA has drawn widespread social media criticism for a recent tweet that encourages people to stop using idioms that have negative connotation in regards to animals.
In the tweet yesterday afternoon, PETA offered some alternative phrasings to some popular sayings and explained that language evolves around society and should take “speciesism” into account.
In a second tweet, PETA explained their reasoning by pointing out the disappearing of “racist, homophobic, or ableist slurs from modern language” and how speciesist phrases should be next.
Just as it became unacceptable to use racist, homophobic, or ableist language, phrases that trivialize cruelty to animals will vanish as more people begin to appreciate animals for who they are and start ‘bringing home the bagels’ instead of the bacon.

The Twitterverse responded swiftly, mostly to make jokes and question PETA’s decision to tweet this.
