LANCASTER, California (NBC) – A sheriff’s deputy in California is being praised after he pushed an elderly woman in a wheelchair more than a mile to her home.

Lancaster sheriff’s deputies responded to a traffic hazard call earlier this week about a wheelchair in the middle of the road.

When they arrived, deputies found the woman stranded in the chair, after its batteries had died.

The officers offered her a ride, but the wheelchair was too large to fit into their patrol car.

Instead of leaving the woman and her wheelchair on the side of the road, one of the deputies decided to push the woman all the way to her home, more than a mile away.

As the deputy pushed the woman down the road, his partner followed behind in the patrol car, offering encouragement and some good-natured ribbing.

“You can pick it up, you’re only going about one mile an hour,” the deputy says.

Once she got home, the woman thanked the deputies for going above and beyond the call of duty.
