CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Work is already underway to demolish the Mount Carmel Nursing Home.

The Ed Rachal Foundation purchased the nursing home on South Alameda in late April.

Crews are looking for and removing asbestos from the building.

Paul Altheide, the foundation's Chief Executive Officer, said once that is done, crews will begin demolishing it. Plans are to have the entire property demolished by Jan. 1, 2020.

Altheide said two acres of that property that backs into Lamar Park will go the Ronald McDonald House. This will allow the organization to build a larger facility for families that need a place to stay while their children are being treated at Driscoll Children's Hospital.

Altheide says that portion of the property will also give the children staying at the Ronald McDonald House somewhere to play.

The rest of the property will be available for commercial development.
