CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — The weekend is finally here! School is back in session and we all need a break to have some fun. Treat yourself to these hand-picked local events. Some of them are for the whole family, some of them are just for the 21+ crowd.

SATURDAY

The 2nd annual **** Harvey Block Party this Saturday

The Rock Bottom Park and Pub is hosting their 2nd annual F*** Harvey Block Party.

Two years after Hurricane Harvey rocked the Texas coast, the community reminds themselves how strong they really are.

The event started Friday, August 24, and goes until Saturday at 7 pm. It is all happening at 507 S Austin st, Rockport, Texas 78382.

The event will feature an appearance from Painting with a Twist, who will be painting their second annual Harvey Painting in honor of the blue crab.

"Swagger" and "Satellite" will be providing the live music.

Mommy and me unicorn tea party this Saturday

There aren't many creatures that are more majestic than the unicorn.

Painting with a Twist invites moms and kids to come paint a unicorn with them.

The event goes from noon to 2 pm this Saturday, August 24 at 5425 S Padre Island Dr., #145, Corpus Christi, Texas 78411.

The $35 ticket covers one canvas per person.

The venue reminds guests that their studio is for painters only and you can "bring your own booze" and "bring your own snacks."

The South Side Farmers' Market Annual Craft Fair is back and better than ever!

NFL Blood Drive kickoff set for Saturday

There will be an NFL kickoff this weekend, but it won’t involve an actual professional football game.

Mattress Firm is teaming up with the Coastal Bend Blood Center for the second annual Need For Life Blood Drive, featuring fun, food and lots of great prizes.

All donors will be entered for a chance to win one of these items:

  • $500 Shopping Spree at Mattress Firm
  • Tempur-Pedic Luxury Pillow
  • 2 Family-4-Packs of Hooks Tickets
  • Television donated by NuStar
  • $50 Gift Card to Jack-In-The-Box

In addition, Jack-In-The-Box will be providing breakfast or lunch for all donors.

Yarn lovers unite! Alpaca Ranch showcasing alpaca yarns this Saturday

Alpac isa fur is pretty special stuff.

There plenty of Alpaca yarn available at the Gulf Breeze Alpaca Ranch Trunk Show this Saturday, August 24.

They will have alpaca experts on hand.

"Lyn, the Shepherdess of Gulf Breeze, will be here to share her lovely yarns straight from our nearby Alpaca Ranch," their event page says.

Community Youth Development Back to School Bash on Saturday

The 78415 Community Youth Development (CYD) Program is hosting its CYD Back to School Bash.

The event will take place from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. Saturday at the Corpus Christi Gym.

Representatives with the CYD Program will be there to register qualifying youths for programs offered during the school year. The free community event will include games, moon jumps, vendors, music and prizes.

The CYD Program offers free programs for the youth who reside or attend school in 78415 through funding by the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services.

The five currently grant funded providers of the CYD program are the Boys & Girls Club of the Coastal Bend, Communities In Schools, Corpus Christi Parks & Recreation Department, YWCA of Corpus Christi and Youth Odyssey.

Church Unlimited-Westside giving out backpacks on Sunday

Here is a "Head's up!" if your child or if you know a kiddo who needs a backpack for school.

Organizers over at Church Unlimited-Westside have announced they are going to give out backpacks this weekend.

Last week, the church held its free Backpack giveaway. Those bags were full with plenty of school supplies to start classes on the right foot.

The backpack giveaway event will be on Sunday.

On the group's Facebook page, Church Unlimited-Westside states, "(They're) giving out backpacks again this weekend to any kids starting school who didn't get one last week. Invite anyone you know to join you at 10:00, 11:30 & 1:00!"

Money for the backpacks was collected by the church through donations.
