CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — A high school is in mourning after Veterans Memorial High School Assistant Principal Jose Rolando Gonzalez died due to complications of COVID-19.

“We offer our condolences to the Gonzalez family and request privacy for them in their grief," said Dr. Roland Hernandez in a statement issued by Corpus Christi ISD late Tuesday. "Many of us know families affected by the pandemic, and we are experiencing losses in the CCISD family as well. Our prayers are with everyone experiencing illness and loss during this difficult time.”

CCISD stated Gonzalez is among four employees in the district who have died because of COVID-19.

Ramon Valdez, who worked in purchasing and distribution, died in July 2020. He served the district from 1992-2015 and returned to the district in 2016.

Los Encinos Elementary School teacher Christine Reyna died in Aug. 2020. She served the district for 24 years.

Traci Garcia, who worked in the district’s student support services department, died in Sep. 2020. She served the district for 15 years.

Administrators said counseling has been, and continues to be, available to employees and students in need.
