CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — USS Lexington guests may have noticed that not everything on the legendary battleship's flight deck this month can actually fly.
During October, the Corpus Christi Fire Department's pink CARE fire truck is among the ship's various planes, but the battle it represents is very different from the planes'.
The truck is the department's way of spotlighting the fight against breast cancer.
“Our No. 1 mission as firefighters is to help the community, and this is one of our missions we have undertaken since 2009,” said CC CARE Program President Carlos Torres.
Torres said cancer affects many lives, including everyday heroes'.
“It’s very important, because cancer is actually one of the No. 1 killers in the firefighter industry," he said. "It’s affected a lot of firefighters, their families, and their children, and that’s another reason why we started the cancer-awareness-relief-efforts campaign.”
Lexington visitors also can receive a discount if they wear pink to the ship.
“We would love to raise the awareness and have people know how important it is to donate to organizations," said USS Lexington Museum on the Bay membership coordinator Amanda Taylor. "Charitable organizations that could help with the fight against cancer.”
