Taft man indicted in connection with birthday party shooting

SINTON, TEXAS — A man accused of shooting and killing a grandfather and his grandsons was indicted.

The shooting occurred at 5:15 p.m. Saturday October 13, 2018 in the 500 block of Wilburn Street.

San Patricio County Grand Jury handed down an indictment on Ronnie Rodriguez, Jr. (21) for capital murder Thursday.

Deputies reported they arrested Rodriguez without incident in Taft.

Investigators say the indictment is the result of the shooting that where five men were shot, four died and one survived.

The shooting took place during a 1-year-old child’s birthday party. Sgt. Brandley identified those killed as 62-year-old Juan Espinoza Sr.; 20-year-old Juan Sandoval III; 22-year-old Jeremy Sandoval; and 25-year-old Nicky Sandoval. Juan Espinoza Sr. was the grandfather to Juan, Jeremy, Nicky.

The grandson’s father, 43-year-old Juan Espinoza Jr., the elder man’s son and father to the three younger men, was airlifted via HALO-Flight to a hospital.

The court set no bond on Rodriguez.
