CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Veteran Nueces County Sheriff's Office Sgt. Raul Salazar died earlier this morning of COVID-19 complications and other medical conditions.

Salazar, 42, had been a member of the Nueces County Sheriff's Office since July 2015.

He graduated from the Del Mar Regional Police Academy in May 1998 and started his law enforcement career with the Beeville Police Department later that year before moving to the Texas A&M-Kingsville University Police Department. He also worked with the Kingsville Police Department and the Kleberg County Sheriff’s Office before coming to the Nueces County in 2013.

Later, Salazar worked as a bailiff for Judge James Klager in County Court #4 before coming to the Nueces County Sheriff’s Office. He started as a patrol deputy, was promoted to corporal in November 2015 and was promoted to sergeant in September 2017.
