CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — The Salvation Army of the Coastal Bend bell ringers are out in the community collecting funds for their Red Kettle Campaign.

You may have seen these volunteers outside Walmart, Hobby Lobby, to even at La Palmera Mall.

However, due to COVID-19, the non-profit says the need for assistance is greater than ever.

“They feed a lot of people, and we work really hard in the community to get out and raise funds,” Salvation Army bell ringer Vera Munoz said.

With each ring, Munoz knows her efforts will help many Coastal Bend families who are in need and provide some Christmas cheer.

“I do this because the Lord has been great to me and I like to get out and I like to spread hope and kindness on the holidays,” Munoz said.

This year is the first time Munoz has volunteered as a bell ringer. And as visitors stop by and donate, the Salvation Army is one step closer to reaching their goal during this Red Kettle season.

Salvation Army of the Coastal Bend Commander Capt. Patrick Gesner says the non-profit is seeking to raise $200,000 this year.

“It is our largest fundraiser of the year, and it goes to help provide services not just during Christmas but to provide some of the funding for programs we do all year round,” Gesner said.

Programs hosted by the Salvation Army include providing blankets and sanitary items for the homeless. Funds will also help families in need, helping them find housing along with meals. This service is help Munoz says she has seen firsthand.

“They have great programs where they take in people off the streets and they rehabilitate them," she said. "I’ve seen a lot of people come out of that program very successful."
