A local mother has been sentenced to life in prison after she was found guilty of murdering her 4-year-old son, Kane McCraney, earlier this year.

The trial for 27-year-old Tawana Shanta Roberson began Monday in a San Patricio County courthouse.

She was found guilty on four counts including murder, serious bodily injury to a child, failure to provide nourishment and child neglect, in a case San Patricio County Assistant District Attorney Douglas Pettit said is one of the most horrendous child abuse cases he's ever seen.

Roberson took Kane to the Northshore Emergency Center in February because she said he was sick.

CPR was performed and Kane was stabilized and transported to Driscoll Children's Hospital, where he later died. Gregory Police said he had numerous injuries and bruises, and was also seriously underweight when he died.

Child Protective Services took Roberson's seven other children into custody where they remain.

Gregory Police, the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services and the Texas Rangers investigated the case.
