PORTLAND, Texas — Portland is the latest municipality to announce the cancellation of a major festival due to the novel coronavirus.
The city's 47th annual Windfest, which was originally postponed from April to November, has been canceled, the Portland Chamber of Commerce announced.
"It's a very family oriented event for the community and it's a fundraiser for the nonprofits in the community as well," said Shelly Stuart, president and CEO of the Portland Chamber of Commerce.
While the event is the organization's largest fundraiser of the year, it's also the largest fundraiser of the year for many of the community's nonprofits, she said.
"This is going to have an enormous impact on us," Stuart said.
As they hope to mitigate the loss of funds, they are hosting events in which they can social distance, and still raise some much-needed funds, she said.
A golf tournament is one such attempt. Registration begins at 7 a.m., with a shotgun start at 8 a.m. on Friday, September 25, 2020 at the Northshore Country Club. For more information call 361-777-4650 or via the web.
