CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — A Corpus Christi police officer is recovering at a local hospital after a dramatic chase Wednesday morning on the 1300 block of Agnes.

The officer was in pursuit of a suspect who fled to a nearby building. When climbing a ladder, the policeman fell through some sheet rock and landed about 10 feet below.

It all started with a routine traffic stop on Laredo Street around 11 a.m.

Corpus Christi police and fire crews responded to reports Wednesday morning of an officer who fell through the ceiling of a building,

The two individuals inside the car had warrants out for their arrest but when officers went to arrest one, he fled on foot.

A witness told police they were inside a nearby building where officers isolated the suspect.

That's when the officer was injured.

"Unfortunately, one of our guys was hurt when the individual just basically had to comply and deal with the consequences of whatever actions he took.” Corpus Christi Senior Officer Travis Pace said.

Eventually, the suspect who fled was taken into custody.

He was originally wanted for burglary in Dallas County, but now is facing new charges including evading and resisting arrest and assault on a peace officer.
