CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — A 56-year-old League City woman was killed early Monday in a pedestrian accident in Calallen.
The Medical Examiner's office has identified the deceased as Susan Clement.
Police were called out to a Stripes store at the intersection of Northwest Boulevard and Trinity River Drive at 4:50 a.m. on Monday. When they arrived, they found a woman had been hit by a truck.
"A 56-year-old woman was either trying to cross the road or standing in the middle of the road and she was struck by a truck, and unfortunately, she was killed at the scene,"
said Lt. Timothy Frazier of the CCPD.
Frazier of the CCPD told KRIS 6 News the woman was not using a crosswalk, and that witnesses said the woman was standing in the roadway. They were unsure whether she was trying to cross, or had confused the right eastbound traffic lane with the shoulder of the road.
The driver of the truck and his wife were not hurt, and were left shaken by the accident.
"This is not their fault," said Frazier. "This is not their fault."
The impact reportedly threw the woman about 130 feet.
Frazier reiterated the importance of knowing your surroundings when you cross a large and busy street such as 624, also known as Northwest Boulevard, in the Calallen area, saying that darkness can play tricks on your eyes.
"Just look where you’re at," he said. "Especially, like, at 624 -- the speed limit is 50 mph, so you get people driving anywhere from 45 to 55 mph. It’s a pretty good speed for vehicles, especially like a large truck like the gentleman was driving. And it’s dark. (That’s especially) when you need to be real cognizant, because the darkness can give you an effect where you don’t think the person is driving as fast as they really are."
