CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — The Oso Bay Wetlands Preserve & Learning Center will be clearing out some brush to make more room for wildlife.
Upon endorsement by the U.S. Department of Agriculture/Natural Resource Conservation Service, the nature preserve plans to remove a select amount of mesquite trees from 30 acres of the site starting today. The project will make things easier for bobcats, deer, birds, and other wildlife to have more space to search for food and venture further into the preserve.
Animals, like people, need space to move, so we will be clearing about 30 percent of the mesquite brush to give our wildlife room to search for food, walk around, and be able to get further into the Preserve.” Preserve Manager Sara Jose says.
The removal will take about 4 weeks if the weather allows.
The brush will not be controlled with cattle grazing or fire because the surrounding areas are neighborhoods.
People will still be able to visit the preserve during the brush removal. They plan to keep work 40 feet away from any sensitive habitats and visitors.
“The contractors we plan to work with are aware that we are promoting wildlife habitat and know what to look for," Jose says, "Therefore, only the smallest trees will be removed. The contractors are also invested in avoiding bird nests, and dense areas where animals may be bedded down.”
