A Corpus Christi Police Department officer fired his weapon after a suspect reportedly tried to hit him with a vehicle.

CCPD Public Information Lt. Michael Pena said the incident happened at around 8 p.m. on the 4700 block of SPID -- in front of the Chick-Fil-A -- after officers tried to conduct a traffic stop.

The white Ford F-150 reportedly hit a vehicle with people in it as it came up to the intersection of Everhart and SPID. As police responded and tried to approach the truck to make a traffic stop, the truck fled.

"The driver then reversed their vehicle, striking a police unit, then drove off in the direction of one of the officers, who discharged his firearm," he said.

This video given to KRIS 6 News shows the incident unfolding from when police attempt to walk up to the truck:

Pena said the suspect then took off, hitting a third vehicle in the process.

It is currently unknown whether anyone was hit by the gunshot. The suspect currently is not in custody. Pena said police are looking to find the driver and "hopefully place the person into custody."

When found, the driver could face charges of aggravated assault on a police officer for driving toward the officer, and aggravated assault for hitting the other vehicles.

The eastbound lanes of SPID have been shut down. Police recommend using alternate routes, because it is unknown how long the street will be closed for the investigation.
