CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Fourth and fifth graders at Oak Park Elementary are the latest CCISD students to take part in the district's bullyproof program.
CCISD Police Sgt. Janelle Cantu started the program four years ago.
She talks to students about bullying and how they can fight it.
A total of 90 students have graduated from the bullyproof program since it began.
“What I have seen, there are students that feel after completing the program, that feel empowered,” Cantu said. “They really believe in themselves and they can feel, they feel that, wow, you know what, maybe I need to step up, or I can do something.”
The sessions sometimes include bulliers, allowing both the bullied student and the bulliers to engage in dialogue and share their feelings.
The bullyproof program is currently only available to fourth and fifth graders but Sgt. Cantu hopes to expand it to middle schools.
