GREGORY, Texas — A new traffic light is set to activate at a busy intersection in the Gregory-Portland area.
The traffic at the intersection of Highways 35 and 361 has quadrupled over the last several years thanks to the growth of industrial activity in that area.
That congestion has also resulted in a higher number of accidents.
The city hopes to make the intersection safer by installing the new traffic lights.
"We've had some near fatalities. And most accident that occurred at that intersection were major accidents, not fender benders and minors," Gregory Police Chief Tony Cano said. "On the turnaround flowing back out we had a lot fender benders, a lot of backed up traffic. I'm hoping this will alleviate a lot of our problems there."
The light will be in operation beginning today.
