CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Several safety initiatives were announced Friday to be put in place before Spring Break at county beaches.
Kiwana Denson announced the Je'Sani Smith Beach Safety Alert Network to honor her late son, who drowned last April near the Bob Hall Pier.
The goal is to provide education, awareness and beach safety measures. Eventually, it is hoped that a statewide alert system will be created with some specific new changes.
There are more safety flags and signs present near the jetties and Bob Hall Pier.
The big TXDOT sings will be placed in designated locations starting next week.
More lifeguards will be in place on the beach.
Nueces County Commissioner Brent Chesney said there haven't been lifeguards on county beaches since 2002.
The Port of Corpus Christi donated $10,000 for the campaign.
