Salazar graduated from the Del Mar Regional Police Academy in May 1998. He soon worked for the Beeville and Kingsville Police Departments before working for the Kleberg County Sheriff's Department.

He joined the Nueces County Sheriff's Office as a deputy in 2013. After working his way up, Salazar was promoted to Sergeant in September 2017.
