The local chapter of the NAACP met with local leaders Monday to discuss race relations in the Coastal Bend.

"The purpose of the meeting today is to talk about how we are going to make things better going forward," said chapter president Terry Mills. "My heart and my prayers go out to those cities who has been affected by this. We don't want that in Corpus Christi.

This meeting happened at the Nueces County Courthouse, and among those in attendance were representatives from the Corpus Christi Police Department, Nueces Co. Judge Barbara Canales, and State Rep. Todd Hunter.

Also there was Nueces Co. Sheriff J.C. Hooper, who took part in a community march this past weekend.

"It's about community," he said. "Law enforcement in Corpus Christi, in Nueces county, in this region has always been part of the community. So why would you run away during trouble times? I mean we have to stay engaged. We will stay engaged."
